ELVA-1’s mm-Wave Radiometric Temperature Measurement for Metallurgical Production

Real-time on-line mm-wave radiometric temperature measurement system for high temperature metallurgical processes

Tallinn, Estonia – 05 Feb., 2025 – ELVA-1 introduces an advanced radiometric system for measuring the molten metal temperature in various types of furnaces used in metallurgical production. This include Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF), Induction Furnace, Cupola Furnace, Blast Furnace, Reverberatory Furnace, Rotary Kiln Furnace, Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM) Furnace, Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) Furnace, Ladle Furnace (LF). Using millimeter-wave technology, our solution provides accurate and continuous temperature monitoring, even in the harsh conditions of dense smoke and dust typical of EAF operations.s, further solidifying ELVA-1’s position as a leader in mm-wave technology.

Traditional temperature measurement methods, such as thermocouples or infrared pyrometers, face significant challenges in the harsh environment of an operating furnace.
– Thermocouples provide temperature data directly from the mass of molten metal, but do not provide continuous monitoring. Thermocouples must also be replaced each time a new temperature measurement is taken, resulting in associated operating costs.
– Optical methods of analysing light emissions from molten slag (optical emission spectrometry, OES) can provide some information on the temperature of the furnace environment, but their main application involves remote control of the chemical composition of the steel, which is critical when melting heterogeneous scrap metal.

Our millimeter-wave radiometric technology overcomes abovementioned limitations, providing accurate, real-time temperature monitoring even in conditions of intense smoke, dust, and slag cover.

Key Advantages of ELVA-1’s MRTR-76 millimeter-wave radiometer

  • Real-Time Molten Metal Temperature Monitoring:
Our system delivers precise, real-time temperature data, improving product quality and optimizing production processes.

  • Resistant to Harsh Environments:
Unlike traditional infrared methods, which struggle with heavy smoke and dust, our millimeter-wave technology ensures reliable performance in extreme furnace conditions.

  • Energy Efficiency Optimization:
Accurate temperature control reduces energy consumption and extends electrode life, leading to significant cost savings.

  • Flexible Design:
The ELVA-1 system seamlessly integrates into existing production workflows and can be customized to meet specific metallurgical requirements.

Measuring the exact temperature of molten metal inside the furnace presents a challenge because direct observation is not possible. The metal surface is always covered by a layer of slag, and intense smoke and dust obstruct traditional optical measurement methods.

How ELVA-1’s Radiometric Technology Works for temperature measurement in EAF
How ELVA-1’s Radiometric Technology Works

ELVA-1’s MRTR-76 millimeter-wave radiometer (75–110 GHz) is designed to overcome these challenges. Instead of attempting to measure the metal directly, our system:

  1. Observes the slag surface – Since the slag is in direct thermal contact with the molten metal, its temperature is closely correlated with the metal’s temperature.
  2. Uses a calibration process – Initial calibration compares radiometric readings of the slag with thermocouple data from the molten metal. This allows our system to accurately determine the metal’s temperature based on slag measurements.
  3. Penetrates smoke and dust – Unlike infrared sensors, which are blocked by dense smoke, millimeter-wave radiation passes through it, ensuring consistent and reliable readings in all furnace conditions.
